Innovation Spotlight: How Ryder is turning up the heat (more efficiently than ever)

Nano heaters slash energy use 18%, boost speed 50%.

We are delighted to announce we’ve adopted Nano Infrared Heating Ring technology. We have integrated these systems into our plastic injection machines to heat and melt the raw plastic pellets, marking a significant leap forward in energy efficiency.

So what does a Nano Infrared Heating Ring do and why is it different to traditional methods?

The normal way of melting plastic feedstock is to use a resistor-based heating system where electric current flows through and heats a cylinder surrounding the feedstock. This has the disadvantage that the hot cylinder also heats the surrounding air, wasting energy. The Nano Infrared Heating Ring directs energy through infrared radiation inwards only, meaning that far less energy is wasted.

This technology is enabling Ryder to deliver powerful real-world results in our large Inland China plant:

  • 50% faster heat-up time compared to conventional heaters
  • Lower operating temperatures, improving worker safety
  • 18% energy savings during production (proven in live tests)

Given plastic injection is such an energy intensive process, accounting for approximately 50% of this site’s energy consumption, this is making a big difference. Installing these Nano Infrared Heating Rings across our fleet of plastic injection machines has reduced energy consumption by a whole 9%.

Critically, the use of this technology isn’t just good for cost efficiency; it’s a big win for the planet and a step forward in making high-performance manufacturing more sustainable. We’re proud to continue driving our business forward with purpose and innovation, and this is just one example of how we’re rethinking the way things are made.
